Lanzarote Volcano Hikes

Lanzarote volcano hikes go in the Los Volcanes natural park next to Timanfaya, where walking is allowed: guided 9 km hikes from US$47, rated 4.8 to 4.9 (October 2026). Routes, fitness and what to bring.

Updated October 2026

You cannot hike inside Timanfaya National Park on your own, so Lanzarote’s volcano hikes go next door, in the Los Volcanes natural park, across the lava fields of the same 1730s eruptions. The guided ones cost about US$47 to US$53 a person on GetYourGuide in October 2026 and are among the best-rated tours on the island, at 4.8 to 4.9.

The hikes are cheap next to the coach tours and rated higher, because the group is small and you are on the ground with someone explaining what you are walking over. Geotrekking’s is the most reviewed; it crosses lava fields and craters on a 9 km route and explains the geology of the eruptions as you go. Blackstone’s climbs a volcano for the view over the lava, includes pickup and drop-off, and brings fruit, biscuits and water.

National park or natural park

The national park is the core of the eruption zone, around Montañas del Fuego, and is protected strictly: no free walking, no free driving, and the only ways in are the coach route and the park’s own small guided walks, such as the Ruta de Tremesana (about 3.5 km, three hours), which are free and booked in advance on reservasparquesnacionales.es. The natural park of Los Volcanes surrounds it and covers more of the same lava, with marked routes open to walkers.

So a volcano hike does not take you to Islote de Hilario or onto the coach route. It takes you across the same eruption’s lava, on foot. If you want both, do the coach in the morning and a hike another day, or book a half day to the park and walk on your own in the natural park.

Fitness and what to bring

The listings ask for a moderate level of fitness and rule out sandals and flip-flops; Blackstone’s adds that it is not for people with heart problems or low fitness. Wear walking shoes with a good sole, because lava is sharp. Bring water, a hat and sun cream: there is no shade on the lava fields. Children are welcome on Blackstone’s hike if they can walk the distance.
