Can You Visit Timanfaya on Your Own?
Yes, by car to Islote de Hilario with a timed €30 ticket, but you cannot drive or walk the volcano route yourself: everyone rides the park coach. Parking, the free guided walks and when a tour is easier.
Yes, you can visit Timanfaya on your own by car, as far as the car park at Islote de Hilario, but you cannot drive or walk the volcano route yourself. CACT Lanzarote, which runs the visitor site, says the national park may not be explored freely by car or on foot. Independent visitors ride the park’s own coach on the Ruta de los Volcanes; organised tours drive the same route in their coaches with an official guide.

Driving there
The visitor site, Montañas del Fuego, is on the hill of Islote de Hilario, with the car park, the coach stop and the El Diablo restaurant all together. CACT’s FAQ puts the parking there. The public road across the lava fields, between Yaiza and Mancha Blanca, takes you past the entrance, and the roads inside the park beyond the car park are for the park’s coaches only.
You need a ticket for a fixed time: €30 for an adult, children under seven free, bought online from CACT. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot; a ticket used outside it is not valid. The tickets guide has the details.
Walking in the park
You cannot hike in the national park on your own. The park itself runs free guided walks for small groups, such as the Ruta de Tremesana from Yaiza, a guided walk of about 3.5 km and three hours, booked in advance on the national parks’ reservation site, reservasparquesnacionales.es; places are few, so check it before you plan around one.
The lava fields next to the national park are a different matter. The Los Volcanes natural park, on the other side of the road, has walking routes you can do alone or with a guide, and that is where the commercial volcano hikes go. Geotrekking Lanzarote’s 9 km hike, from US$49, is rated 4.8. The hiking guide compares the hikes.
The visitor centre at Mancha Blanca
The national park’s visitor and interpretation centre is at Mancha Blanca, north-east of Islote de Hilario on the road towards Tinajo. It explains the eruptions of 1730 to 1736 and 1824 and is the place to start if you want the geology before the coach ride.
When a tour is easier
| If | Book | From |
|---|---|---|
| You have a car but not the patience for the gate | Timanfaya Express from Yaiza | US$64 |
| You have no car | Timanfaya half day with pickup | US$66 |
| You want the caves too | Timanfaya, Jameos and Cueva full day | US$100 |
| You want the park after hours | Evening tour with volcano dinner | US$150 |
Prices as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026.
Doing it on your own costs €30 and some planning. A half day with pickup costs a little more than twice that and removes the driving, the parking and the slot booking, and the guide on the coach is live rather than recorded. The evening tour is the one thing you cannot do on your own: it visits after the regular visitors have left.

Wear closed shoes either way: the operators ask for them because the ground at Islote de Hilario is uneven and sharp.
