How a Lanzarote Volcano Tour Works
Pick a half day or a full day, let the coach collect you, ride the Ruta de los Volcanes, and wear closed shoes.
Pick a Half Day or a Full Day
A half day covers Timanfaya alone: the Ruta de los Volcanes and the demonstrations at Islote de Hilario. A full day adds El Golfo and its green lagoon, the La Geria vineyards or the caves in the north, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes.
Let the Coach Collect You
Most tours pick up from Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Arrecife; the operator confirms the exact stop the day before. If you have a car, the express tours from Yaiza and Playa Blanca skip the queue at the park entrance.
Ride the Ruta de los Volcanes
You cannot drive or walk freely inside Timanfaya. Everyone sees the craters from a coach on the Ruta de los Volcanes, the park's own or a tour's with an official guide, about 35 to 40 minutes, then watches the geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario, where the heat just under the ground turns a bucket of water into a burst of steam.
Wear Closed Shoes
The ground at Islote de Hilario and in the caves is uneven and sharp, so the operators ask for closed-toe trainers. Bring a layer for the wind, sun cream and water; lunch is extra on most full days, and the camel ride at the foot of the volcanoes is paid in cash.

The Guide
Choosing a Lanzarote Volcano Tour: Timanfaya, Then What?
Every volcano tour on Lanzarote rides the same coach route through Timanfaya National Park, because nobody may drive their own car or walk it freely. What differs is how you get there and what else the day includes.
A Lanzarote volcano tour is a day or half day to Timanfaya National Park, the Fire Mountains, where a coach drives you along the Ruta de los Volcanes through the craters and lava of the 1730s eruptions and guides at Islote de Hilario show you how hot the ground still is. The one this page puts first is Low Cost Tours Europe’s Timanfaya Park, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes Tour: a full day from the resorts that adds the Cueva de los Verdes lava tube and César Manrique’s Jameos del Agua, with all three entries included. It is from US$100 a person (checked October 2026) and rated 4.5 from 2,917 reviews.
Check dates for the Timanfaya and caves tour

It is the day for a first visit: Timanfaya in the morning, the north of the island in the afternoon, and no driving or ticket booking of your own. If you only want the volcanoes, a half day does Timanfaya alone for about two-thirds of the price.
Why everyone rides the same route
Timanfaya is protected. CACT Lanzarote, which runs the visitor site at Montañas del Fuego, says plainly that you may not explore the national park freely by car or on foot. Private cars go as far as the car park at Islote de Hilario; from there independent visitors ride the park’s coaches on the Ruta de los Volcanes, a route César Manrique laid out, with recorded commentary, and organised tours drive it in their own coaches with an official guide. CACT lists the coach route at 35 minutes and the whole visit at about 90.
So a tour does not show you a different Timanfaya. What it changes is the getting there, the queue at the park entrance and the rest of your day.
Which Lanzarote volcano tour to book
The tours split into half days for Timanfaya alone, at about US$64 to US$73, full days that add El Golfo, La Geria or the caves at about US$98 to US$107, and the evening volcano dinner at US$150.
Pick the day that fits:
Timanfaya Park, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes
A full day with pickup: the Ruta de los Volcanes and the Islote de Hilario demonstrations, a guided walk through the lava tube, free time at Jameos del Agua. All three entries included.

The park after the day visitors leave: the volcano route and the demonstrations, then a three-course dinner cooked over the volcano's heat, with wine and live music.
See the evening tour →Prices, ratings and review counts from GetYourGuide, checked October 2026; operators price by season and pickup point, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
If you have a car, the express tours skip the queue at the park gate: Canary Trip Booking’s Timanfaya Express from Yaiza parks you in the village square and takes you in by bus, entrance included, in at most two and a half hours, from US$64. The tickets guide compares that with buying the €30 ticket yourself.
What you see at Islote de Hilario

Islote de Hilario is the hill at the heart of Montañas del Fuego, with the car park, the coach stop and the El Diablo restaurant. Before or after the coach route, guides show what the volcano is still doing under your feet: water poured into a pipe in the ground comes back up as a jet of steam, and dry brush pushed into a hollow catches fire on its own. The restaurant grills meat over a pit heated by the same ground.
The eruptions that made this landscape ran from 1730 to 1736 and buried about a quarter of the island, with a smaller one in 1824. Timanfaya became a national park in 1974. The volcanoes guide covers whether the island could erupt again.
The full days: El Golfo, La Geria and the caves
The full-day tours combine Timanfaya with two or three of the island’s other sights, and the combination is the real choice:
| Tour | Adds to Timanfaya | From |
|---|---|---|
| Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes | Lava tube and Manrique caves, three entries included | US$100 |
| Timanfaya Park and Jameos del Agua | El Golfo’s green lagoon and Jameos del Agua | US$98 |
| Full Day Bus Tour with Scenic Views | El Golfo, the camel station, Jameos del Agua | US$98 |
| Volcanos of Timanfaya and Caves with Lunch | El Golfo, La Geria, Jameos del Agua, lunch included | US$107 |
| Full-Day Island Highlights Tour | Both caves, Haría, La Geria; tickets depend on the option | US$57 |
Prices as listed on GetYourGuide in October 2026.
Lunch is extra on most of them: Low Cost Tours Europe’s full day with the caves quotes about €18 at the restaurant, and the camel ride at the foot of the volcanoes is about €12 for 25 minutes, paid in cash. The Island Highlights Tour is the cheapest because its basic option leaves the tickets out; check which option you are booking. The island tour guide compares them in more detail.
On foot or by buggy
You cannot hike inside the national park on your own, but you can walk the lava fields of the Los Volcanes natural park right next to it with a guide. Geotrekking Lanzarote’s 9 km hike across Timanfaya's volcanic landscapes, from US$49, is rated 4.8 from 1,551 reviews, and Blackstone’s guided volcano hike with transfers is rated 4.9. The hiking guide sets them side by side.
The buggy tours sell themselves as volcano tours, and the most booked one, H2O Sports’ off-road volcano buggy tour, from US$168 for a buggy for two, runs in the north of the island, through old quarries to the island’s highest point, not through Timanfaya.
What a Lanzarote volcano tour costs
Half days to Timanfaya cost about US$64 to US$73 a person on GetYourGuide in October 2026, full days with the caves US$98 to US$107, and the evening tour with dinner US$150. Most include the park entrance; the Montañas del Fuego ticket on its own is €30 for an adult from CACT, children under seven free, with a fixed time slot. The worth-it guide says how much of a day it deserves, and the on-your-own guide covers going by car.

What Guests Say About the Timanfaya, Jameos and Cueva Tour
"Overall, we had an exciting and impressive day. We felt very comfortable and can highly recommend this tour. Everything was great👍😊"
"It's a shame we weren't able to swim in the natural pool, but the trip was wonderful."
"Timanfaya Park. Cueva Verde. At the restaurant, there was no information about the ingredients in the food, so we didn't really know what we were going to eat. Hélène was a great guide, and the bus driver was excellent."
"The tours were interesting, but the bus was late departing without any message about the delay, which was rather unpleasant."
"A fantastic day trip! Very good organization, there was sufficient time for each activity, and the guide was very friendly. I recommend it!"
"We really enjoyed the excursion. Tano explained everything to us very well, and he's very friendly. The drivers were great too. The only thing I can say is that I would have liked to spend more time at all the places."
"A tour that I can highly recommend! It was very interesting and enjoyable to see these three highlights of Lanzarote. And at all three locations, we didn't have to wait in line for tickets, but could go straight in. The price was also absolutely fine – the individual entrance fees alone cost a lot."

Lanzarote Volcano Tour FAQ
The questions people ask before visiting Timanfaya and the Fire Mountains, answered in the first sentence.
For a first visit, a full day that pairs Timanfaya with the caves in the north, such as Low Cost Tours Europe's Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes tour; for the volcanoes alone, a half day. The full day includes all three entries and pickup (US$100, 4.5 from 2,917 reviews, October 2026). The Timanfaya half day is US$66 with the park entrance. For something different, the evening tour with a volcano dinner visits after the day visitors have left.
Yes: it is the island's main sight, and the lava fields of the 1730s eruptions are like nowhere else in the Canaries. The visit itself is short, about 90 minutes including the 35-minute coach route, so most people pair it with El Golfo, La Geria or the caves. It disappoints people who expected to walk among the craters; that happens on a guided hike in the natural park next door. The worth-it guide goes further.
Yes, by car as far as Islote de Hilario, but you cannot drive or walk the volcano route yourself. CACT Lanzarote, which runs Montañas del Fuego, says the park may not be explored freely by car or on foot. You park at Islote de Hilario, show a timed €30 ticket and ride the park's coach on the Ruta de los Volcanes. To skip the queue at the gate, the Timanfaya Express from Yaiza takes you in by bus from the village. The on-your-own guide has the details.
€30 for an adult at Montañas del Fuego, children under seven free, as listed by CACT Lanzarote in October 2026. The ticket includes the 35-minute coach route, the geothermal demonstrations and Islote de Hilario, with a fixed time slot. Tours that include it cost from about US$64 for an express visit to US$100 for a full day with the caves. The tickets guide compares them.
Not any more: CACT now sells Montañas del Fuego tickets with a fixed date and time, booked in advance. It asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your slot and says a ticket used outside its slot is no longer valid, with no changes or refunds. A tour avoids the booking, and the express tour from Playa Blanca also promises priority access to the volcano route.
About an hour and a half at Montañas del Fuego, which is how long CACT lists for the visit. That covers the coach route, the demonstrations and a look around Islote de Hilario. Add the drive in and the queue and a half-day tour takes four to six hours, which is why most people pair Timanfaya with El Golfo, La Geria or the caves on a full day.
Lanzarote's volcanoes are considered active, though none is erupting: the last eruption was in 1824. The heat is still there at Islote de Hilario, where water poured into the ground comes back as steam and the El Diablo restaurant grills over it. The big eruptions ran from 1730 to 1736. The volcanoes guide covers whether it could erupt again.
You can drive to the Islote de Hilario car park and along the public road that crosses the area, but not onto the volcano route, which only coaches with an official guide or the park's own commentary use. Parking is at Islote de Hilario, next to the coach stop and the El Diablo restaurant. If you would rather not drive at all, the half-day tour collects you from your hotel.
Hammer's One Million Years B.C. (1966) is the best known: Timanfaya and the green lagoon at El Golfo are among its listed locations, alongside Teide on Tenerife. Lanzarote's film office lists other films and series shot in its volcanic landscapes. Several full-day tours stop at El Golfo, which Low Cost Tours Europe's Timanfaya and Jameos day calls a famous film location.
Yes, at the camel station at the foot of the volcanoes, paid on the spot in cash: about €12 for 25 minutes on Low Cost Tours Europe's days. It is not included on any tour here, but several stop there: the half day, First Minute Travel's full day and the Island Highlights Tour.
Most do, from Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Arrecife, with the exact stop confirmed the day before. LanzaroteGuides' Island Highlights Tour messages you by WhatsApp around 3 pm the day before, and says the pickup is not always at your hotel door. The express tours are the exception: you drive to Yaiza or Playa Blanca and board there.
Closed-toe trainers: the operators ask for them because the ground at Islote de Hilario and in the caves is uneven and sharp. Bring a layer for the wind, sun cream and water. The caves are not suitable for wheelchairs or reduced mobility, and the hikes need a moderate level of fitness, as the 9 km Timanfaya hike notes.
